This 1999 Pontiac
Sunfire headlamp assembly is easily accessible.
First, I removed the
upper plastic radiator cover.
The red arrows show the
six retainer clips that had to be removed.
To release each retainer clip, I pulled up on the
pin in the center of the retainer, using a tack
puller.
Then I maneuvered the plastic cover off and
placed it out of the way.
To replace
the retainer, I push the base of the retainer in
the hole and then push the center pin down into the
retainer to lock it.
I removed the first headlight mounting bolt
(red arrow)
using a 13mm socket.
Then I
removed the second bolt with the ratchet and
socket.
Note: These are special bolts, as
shown with the red arrow.
Once the 2 screws were removed,
I lifted the assembly up and out of the mounting
area.
I lifted up
the wire connector lock tab...
...and pulled the connector from
the bulb.
To remove the
bulb I turned the assembly retainer counter
clock-wise...
...then pulled the bulb out.
Caution:
Avoid touching the
new headlight bulb with your bare hands. Oil
from your skin can get on the glass and
cause the bulb to overheat and burn out.
Hold the new bulb with a tissue or piece of
paper.
With the
headlight assembly removed I was able to reach inside
the bumper area and remove the marker lamp
socket, by turning the socket counter-clockwise.
To remove the bulb from the socket I
just pulled
it straight out.
I removed the turn signal socket by reaching both
hands under the lens. With one hand I pressed the
lock tab (red arrow) and used the other hand to
turned the socket.
Then I removed the bulb by pulling
it straight out
of the socket.
