The headlight housing fasteners are removed. The upper grille fasteners are removed and the grille is propped away from the body. The light assembly is lifted out and the bulbs holders are twisted out so the bulbs can be replaced.

Start:

This 2007 Chevrolet Cobalt has the type of headlight assembly that needs to be removed to replace the headlight or turn signal bulb.

I used a 10mm socket to remove one of the two bolts holding the headlight assembly to the mounting bracket (yellow arrow).

 

Then I removed the second bolt (yellow arrow). Removing bolts for headlight housing, Chevy Cobalt 2007. 

 

 Fasteners for grill on Chevy Cobalt. I found that the grille clips (yellow arrows) have to be removed so that the headlight assembly can be taken out.

To remove these fasteners, I pried on the button in the center of the clip.

 

Then I pried up on the base of the clip to remove it. Removing grille fasteners on 07 Cobalt. 

 

 Lifting headlight assembly from front of Chevy Cobalt. I pulled the black plastic part of the grille forward and wedged a piece of wood behind it to hold it away from the car body.

Then I was able to remove headlight assembly from the mounting panel.

Caution: Be careful when putting anything behind the plastic grille... it's possible to damage the radiator if a block of wood or other spacer was placed against the radiator fins.

 

I pulled the headlight assembly out far enough to reach the electrical connectors.

To disconnect the wiring, I pressed on the release tab and pulled the connector apart.

 Unplugging turn signal bulb, Chevrolet Cobalt. I twisted the turn signal socket counter-clockwise and pulled the socket from the housing.

 

Then I turned the headlight socket counter-clock wise to remove it from the housing. Removing head lite socket from light housing, Chevy Cobalt. 

 

 New headlight on Chevy Cobalt. Assembly was the reverse of removal.

When I installed the new bulb, I made sure not to touch the glass with my hands... the oil on your skin can leave a residue that can cause the glass to overheat and make the bulb burn out early.
